Andrew Bunting: Magnolias

Do you recall the first plants that caught your eye–the ones that proved your gateway into plantaholic behavior? Andrew Bunting looked out his childhood bedroom window into the canopy of an old saucer magnolia, and was bitten big-time by the magnolia bug. Andrew built his magnolia collection from 50 to more than 200 cultivars. That’s a lot of magnolias. If you ask him, every garden needs a showpiece — and for many of us, a magnolia tree is it.

Join us as Andrew shares how to use these denizens of spring in small gardens and tight spaces, but also as companion plants with some tried and true favorites. He details what temperature zones in which they'll grow and flower and the type of soil, sunlight and care they need to thrive year after year. He also explains how to grow more magnolias from seeds and stem cuttings in case you get hooked.

Andrew Bunting is the Assistant Director, Chicago Botanic Garden Director of Plant Collections
